Builder Search

NPS Voyager offers two search modes: Basic Search and Builder Search. The Builder Search makes it easy for users without expert search skills to construct complex searches. A Builder Search finds records with search terms contained in specific fields (e.g., Author, Title, Subject, Publisher, ISBN, etc.) or anywhere in the record (Keyword Anywhere), according to the selection(s) made by the user in the Search Type list(s). (Note that you must scroll to the top of the Search Type list to select the Keyword Anywhere option).

Results from all of the Search Type options on the Builder Search page are displayed in the Titles Index, with the exception of the Keyword Anywhere option. These results are displayed in the Keyword Titles Index. Both of these indexes are sorted alphabetically by Title. However, you may change the default sort order by selecting another option in the Sort By drop-down menu at the upper left of the results page.

To perform a Builder Search, do the following:

  1. Type in the search term(s) you want to find in the first Search For box. Use ? for truncation (e.g., yellow? retrieves yellow, yellowing, yellows, yellowstone...).
  2. Select an option from the Search For drop-down menu according to whether you want to search for all the search terms, any of the search terms, or the search terms as a phrase.
  3. Select a search option from the first Search Type list
  4. To narrow your search, select which Boolean operator (AND, OR, or NOT) you want applied to the next search term(s).
  5. Enter terms to the second Search For box, as needed, and an option from the Search For drop-down menu, as appropriate.
  6. Select a search option from the second Search Type list.
  7. To narrow your search even further, proceed to the third Search For box/drop-down menu and Search Type list and repeat the steps above.
  8. Click the Set Search Limits button if you want to limit your search based on additional criteria.
  9. Click the Search button to begin your search.
  10. Search results may be selected for saving (emailing, printing, or downloading to a file) using the options provided in the Save Options box that appears at the bottom of every record display and results list page.
  11. Click the Reset or New Search button to clear the search page (note that you must click the Clear Limits button to begin a new search if Search Limits are still in effect).
